Sun-stressed skin? i-PRF supports recovery from sun-related damage

Sunburn damages superficial skin cells and accelerates ageing. Scientific research on the effects of sunburn. i-PRF is a natural treatment used to support recovery and vitality after excessive sun exposure. It can support repair, calm stressed skin and promote cell renewal.

What is i-PRF and how does it support sun-stressed skin?

i-PRF, or injectable platelet-rich fibrin, is prepared from the patient’s own blood. It contains fibrin, platelets, growth factors and white blood cells that support natural repair.

Compared with PRP, i-PRF releases bioactive factors gradually, providing a sustained regenerative effect.

It activates renewal without adding synthetic active ingredients. Because the material comes from the patient, it is generally well tolerated, including by sensitive skin, after individual assessment.

Why may i-PRF suit summer skin recovery?

It is easy to get too much sun in summer and notice only later that the skin has become sensitive, dry or mildly burned. At that stage, the skin needs calm, supportive care rather than additional irritation. Acute or severe sunburn should be allowed to heal and medically assessed when needed before any elective procedure.

After the acute reaction has passed, i-PRF may support gradual recovery because it is derived from the patient’s own body and aims to activate natural repair.

At the end of summer, clients often tell us that their skin has become dull and lifeless. A carefully timed treatment may help restore balance and radiance and support the results of earlier skincare.

Clinic owner Agve on autologous blood treatment after sun-related skin stress:

‘When the acute sunburn has healed but the skin still feels stressed, i-PRF can act like support from your own body: natural, calming and regenerative. In my experience, it can help restore moisture, vitality and resilience after excessive sun exposure.’

Which areas can be treated with i-PRF?

i-PRF can be used on areas of the face and body where skin needs renewal. At our clinic, common areas include:

  • Face – especially the cheeks, forehead and areas around the eyes and mouth.

  • Neck and décolletage – areas that receive considerable sun and are often insufficiently protected.

  • Backs of the hands – often forgotten despite frequent UV exposure.

  • Shoulders and back – after the skin has healed from a stronger burn or when the goal is to improve overall quality.

i-PRF is not limited to facial care. Treatment can be adapted to areas requiring regenerative or preventive support.

What happens during i-PRF treatment?

The procedure is controlled and generally well tolerated. Most clients describe mild pricking or warmth.

  1. Consultation – we assess the skin and expectations and confirm suitability.

  2. Preparation and anaesthesia – the skin is cleansed and lidocaine-based numbing gel is applied for about 15–20 minutes.

  3. Blood collection – a small blood sample is drawn under sterile conditions.

  4. Preparation – the blood is centrifuged to isolate the fraction rich in fibrin, cells and bioactive factors.

  5. Injection – i-PRF is introduced into the selected areas with fine needles.

  6. Finishing and aftercare – soothing cream and sunscreen are applied as needed, and individual home-care advice is provided.

The appointment takes about 45–90 minutes depending on the area. Most clients resume normal activities the following day.

The skin may be pink, red or sensitive, and small injection-site bruises can occur. These usually resolve within a few days. Make-up can generally be applied after 24 hours if needed.

When should i-PRF not be performed?

i-PRF is not suitable in every situation. Contraindications include:

  • blood-clotting disorders or treatment with blood-thinning medication;

  • acute or chronic autoimmune disease;

  • pregnancy or breastfeeding;

  • active cancer or cancer treatment;

  • fever or feeling unwell on the day;

  • allergy to the numbing gel, such as lidocaine.

If any point applies, it does not exclude every aesthetic treatment. We can help find a suitable alternative. Ask us for advice.
