What does increased pores mean

Pores are small openings on the skin’s surface from which sebum and sweat are released. If these openings are wider and more noticeable than usual, they are referred to as enlarged pores. Big pores may make the skin texture uneven and the complexion less smooth.

Why the pores are expanding

  • Overfunction of sebaceous glands: Oily skin is the main cause of large pores. Excess sebum stretches the pore walls, gradually enlarging the opening over time. Clogged pores (blackheads) also stretch the pores and can make them larger.
  • Ageing: As age increases, the skin loses its elasticity, collagen decreases and the surrounding area of the pores no longer contracts as tightly. Therefore, the pores may become more visible. flaccid leather and ageing to leave the pores permanently enlarged.
  • Sun: Chronic sun damage thickens the epidermis and can increase the visibility of pores. UV radiation also damages collagen, which helps keep pores small.
  • Genetics: Some people naturally have larger or more visible pores, especially if their skin type is combination or oily.

How increased pores affect the skin

  • Uneven texture: Large pores can give the skin a rough appearance, especially noticeable under makeup.
  • Acne and blackheads: Wide pores are more likely to become clogged with sebum and dirt, increasing the risk of blackheads and pimples.

Porous constriction and treatment

  • Daily maintenance: Use pore-tightening products – for example, a salicylic acid toner helps dissolve sebum in the pores, and a retinoid cream promotes skin renewal, making the pores appear smaller. Clay masks also absorb excess oil and temporarily tighten the pores.
  • Procedures in the clinic: Chemical peels (such as those with glycolic or salicylic acid) reduce sebum and exfoliate blockages, helping to reduce pore size. Laser treatments and microneedling stimulate collagen production in the deeper layers of the skin, which tightens the edges of pores. Photorejuvenation can also even out skin texture and reduce the visibility of large pores.

Increased Pore Prevention

  • Correct cleaning: Gently cleanse your face twice daily to remove dirt and makeup that could stretch pores. Avoid over-exfoliating with too harsh scrubs, which can have the opposite effect (skin irritation increases sebum production).
  • Sunscreen: Protect your skin from the sun to keep collagen strong. Using SPF daily helps prevent UV damage that would otherwise make pores more noticeable.
