What exactly is collagen and elastin? Why do we need it so much and how can we get it? I will give you a very simple example so that we can first understand what they are, how they work in the skin and how we can generate collagen and elastin with Sculptra and Radiesse.

Imagine that beneath the skin there is a highly elastic and dense sponge (yes, I checked the Estonian dictionary and confirmed that it is indeed a sponge, not a squishy sponge). Collagen has a strong sponge-like structure – this keeps the skin tight and provides support.
Elastine is like rubber bands woven into the sponge – they help the skin stretch and pull back into shape so the skin doesn’t sag.

When we are young, this ‘sponge’ is thick, elastic and well-hydrated. Over the years, it becomes thinner and less springy:

  • weakening of the frame (collagen),

  • stretching of rubber bands (elastine),

  • and Svamm is collapsing.

If the skin collapses under the skin, The skin is also slightly lower. – this creates looseness and wrinkles.

Collagen stimulation helps restore this inner ‘sponge’. Procedures like Sculptra and Radiesse signal the skin to start producing more collagen and elastin itself. The result develops gradually – the skin becomes firmer, denser and ‘pringier’ again.

Sculptra – What is that?

Sculptra is a filler and biostimulating preparation whose main component is Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA). When injected under the skin, it does not immediately fill volume like a conventional filler, but instead triggers skin regeneration: PLLA particles stimulate fibroblasts to produce new collagen.
The result is a strengthening and thickening of the skin structure (the sponge part as if becomes thicker again). This is a gradual rejuvenation that develops over 2–6 months.

Sculptra

Radiesse – what is that?

While Sculptra works by slowly and gradually activating collagen production, then Radiesse also gives an immediate filling effect. Radiesse contains Calcium hydroxyapatite (CaHA) microspheres that act in the skin like small support points. The body naturally begins to produce new collagen around them collagen and elastinwhich strengthen the internal structure of the skin.

Initially, Radiesse gives the area a slight volume (because the gel carries it), but when the gel is absorbed over time, the microspheres continue to work in the skin. This means that the result is both immediate and long-lasting. immediate and gradual.

While Sculptra is more of a ‘long game’ player that gently revives collagen production in the skin, Radiesse is well-suited for those who want to see a subtle change on the same day. They also want long-term skin strengthening.

Radiesse

Sculptra and Radiesse are not competing – they simply suit different areas

While both procedures stimulate collagen production, they are not meant to replace each other. Each product has its own strengths and clear areas where it works best. Therefore, the question is not which one is ‘better’, but Which is appropriate for the specific area and purpose.

Most often, Sculptra is suitable for:

  • in case of a decrease in the overall volume of the cheeks

  • filling points of interest

  • flaccid facial contour

  • for improving skin density in the neck and decollection area

  • the back of the hand when the skin has become thinner

Most often it is suitable for Radie:

  • For raising or forming jaw lines and chin

  • to support the cheek area when there are mild voluminous u

  • for filling the back of the hand (possible with both products, but Radiesse provides immediate support)

  • for the neck, we use a diluted technique to improve the overall quality of the skin

When will the results be seen and how long will they last?

Both products provide skin with support and improve its quality, but the speed of results differs. Sculptra It works a little more slowly – it does not create an immediate filling effect but helps the skin to gradually produce more collagen and elastin itself. The first changes usually become noticeable after 6–8 weeks and the result continues to develop over several months. To achieve the optimal result, the Sculptra procedure is usually performed 2 to 3 timesabout At intervals of 6 to 8 weeks.

Radiesse In this case, a slight change is immediately visible because the gel initially provides some support to the area. As the gel wears off over time, the calcium particles remain in the skin and continue to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin. This results in both an immediate and a deeper effect later on. Radiesse procedures are also commonly performed. 2 to 3 times, At intervals of 6 to 8 weeksTo keep the result even and natural.

The duration of the result is longer for both products than for hyaluronic acid fillers – frequently 12 to 18 monthsIn some people, it may also take longer. The exact duration is influenced by the skin condition, the area, and individual metabolism.

Who is Sculptra and Radiesse suitable for – and who is it better to avoid?

Both procedures are well-suited for individuals who do not wish the appearance of ‘filler injections’, but rather seek skin strengthening, a firmer feeling and a natural result. They are a good choice if the skin has become thinner, looser or if facial contours have slightly sagged over time. Sculptra and Radiesse are suitable for both younger and mature skin – for anyone whose goal is to improve skin quality, not to artificially alter facial shape.

However, these procedures are not intended for filling very fine, superficial lines or for naturally enhancing lip volume – hyaluronic acid fillers are more appropriate for these. If the skin in the area is very thin, inflamed or there have been autoimmune diseases, we may recommend an alternative solution if necessary. These procedures are also not performed during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

The most important thing is that the person understands: Sculptra and Radiesse do not change facial features overnight, but they help the skin become stronger and more elastic on its own. This is suitable for those who appreciate a natural result and are ready to wait for a gradual but lasting change.

What to expect after the procedure?

After an injection of Sculptra or Radiesse, there may be slight swelling, redness, or sensitivity in the injection area. This is completely normal and usually disappears within a few hours, sometimes up to 1–2 days. Proper massage is important for both preparations because it helps the preparation distribute evenly and ensures a natural final result.

For Sculptra, we use the 5-5-5 rule:
five minutes, five times a day, five days in a row — and this massage is rather firmer to prevent irregularities and support even collagen formation.
Radies the massage is also necessary, but with slightly softer movements. We will demonstrate all the correct techniques and directions after the procedure so the patient can comfortably repeat them at home.

Although most daily activities can be resumed immediately, it is advisable to plan for a few days of rest after the procedure — this allows the skin to recover and reduces the risk of swelling, especially if a larger area has been treated.

Summary

Sculptra and Radiesse are both potent collagen stimulators that help the skin regain strength, elasticity, and density from within. They do not create artificial volume or change facial features overnight—results develop gradually and remain natural.
The procedure is well-suited for those with early sagging or thinning skin, as well as those looking to prevent signs of aging and maintain facial contours.
